Traverse City Film Festival – July 30 – August 4, 2019

The 2019 Traverse City Film Festival will be held July 30 – August 4, 2019.

The Traverse City Film Festival was founded by Oscar winning filmmaker Michael Moore as a charitable, educational, nonprofit organization committed to showing “Just Great Movies” and helping to save one of America’s few indigenous art forms — the cinema.

The festival brings films and filmmakers from around the world to northern Michigan for the annual film festival in late July to early August, and also owns and operates a year-round, community-based, mission-driven art house movie theater, the State Theatre.

Thanks, TCFF!

Riotous, endearing, and ridiculously entertaining, when comedy writer Steve Young stumbles upon the hilarious, hidden world of entertainment know as industrial musicals (Broadway style shows produced for America's corporate giants like Ford and GE) he finds not only a new obsession, but an unexpected connection to his fellow man. Told with warmth, charm, and unabashed nostalgia, Young's love for this slice of Americana cheese is infectious and life-affirming. It's a film that works its delightful magic so thoroughly you're sure to be humming tunes about bathroom fixtures ("The Bathrooms are Coming!").🎵🎶 ... See MoreSee Less

Hey everybody👋 We’re gonna be sharing some TCFF selections that are readily available on streaming services for you to revisit or discover while you are flattening the curve. Our first pick from back in 2015 is the ultimate example of how art and creativity are essential in times of isolation. ... See MoreSee Less

Suttons Bay Art Festival – August 3 – 4, 2019

Suttons Bay Art Festival

This annual art fair takes place at the beautiful Suttons Bay Marina Park on the first weekend of August (August 3 & 4th, 2019, Sat. 10am – 6pm, Sun. 10am – 5pm). One hundred artists along with community groups, a community library book sale, food vendors and a children’s area make this the perfect place to spend an art-filled weekend at the beach. Join us on Sunday morning for a pancake breakfast in the park (free to exhibiting artists). This is the second year Blackbird Arts has hosted the breakfast.

A committee of volunteers oversees the selection of visiting artists and the distribution of funds generated by the event. Thousands of dollars have been contributed to local arts-related education projects. These include music and dance performances, artist in residence programs and scholarships for local art students.

Come to Suttons Bay in August, participate – as an artist, as a shopper or as a volunteer. Join in the fun!

Port Oneida Fair – August 9 – 10, 2019

Join us on August 9 & 10 for the 2019 Port Oneida Fair!

Each year near the beginning of August, you can take a step back in time at the Port Oneida Fair and experience life as it was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Imagine the life of the pioneers as you help bale hay or watch a broom-maker at work. Learn about spinning, basket weaving, soap making, butter making, candle dipping, and fur trapping. Listen as park rangers and local history experts share the area’s history. Watch as teams of oxen and horses cut, load, and haul hay and artists and craftsmen demonstrate their skills.

The fair is held at 6 of the historic farmsteads in Port Oneida. Each farm has a variety of artists, crafts, food, and activities for visitors. Click on the farm names below to see what’s happening at each farm. A shuttle bus runs between the farms on a regular schedule during the fair, so you can park your car and easily get around to the different venues.

Dechow Farm
Kelderhouse Farm
Schoolhouse
Burfiend Barn
Olsen Farm
Thoreson Farm

Sky gazing will close out the two-day fair on Saturday, August 10 at the Thoreson Farm. We will be looking at the sun from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm and at the night sky from 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Join park rangers and the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) to experience a form of recreation that has been enjoyed by many generations and continues today. GTAS members share their telescopes and knowledge while viewing Mars, Saturn, and the Perseid meteor shower. Learn about astronomy as it was in the 1900s. Remember to bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car.

Are you an artist who has created work in or of the Port Oneida area? We are always looking for submission for our Port Oneida Fair poster.

The Port Oneida Fair is presented by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in partnership with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. To learn more about how you can help support the park, visit www.phsb.org.

Flea Circus (or Cirque du SoLeelanau)

Fiddler on the Woof! (Broadway theme)

Woofs of the loom...instead of fruit of the loom... dogs in undies... Captain Underpants

Roxanne Werly I'll bet you could come up with a great theme and you'll have to have your babies in the parade this year 🙂

Su-paw Heroes!

A zombie theme? Armadogdon

Ford Vs Furry

Celebridogs and Pupparazzi

Dog Tired

Great job, but Marshall is spelled wrong😯

She did a great job.

Great choice!

Her renown spans the Nation from Lake to the beaches of Virginia.
