Manitou Passage Golf Club – A Northern Michigan Adventure
By Jim Barnes It may seem unthinkable, even sacrilegious, to make any changes to a course designed by the great Arnold Palmer. Originally opened in 1998 as King’s Challenge, the course languished a bit when Sugar Loaf Mountain Ski Resort closed (the course is built alongside the ski hill), so it needed some rejuvenating and updating. The Homestead Resort
Lake Michigan’s spectacular vistas make this a resort unlike others. The color of the water–sometimes blue, sometimes turquoise, sometimes golden–is one reason why. Another is relaxing along the water. You and each member of your family or group can do as much or as little as you like. That’s why this resort is celebrated, both near [...] more...

Experience how life was lived over a century ago with a visit to the authentic 1910 farmhouse. Unique accommodations and a delicious home-cooked farm breakfast await you at the historic Suttons Bay lodging with proprietress and food historian Susan Odom.

Earlier in June, we dropped by the Hillside Homestead. Here our some photos from our visit on June 6, 2015.

Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula – Blossom Day – May 16, 2015

A Celebration of Blossoms, Beauty and Bounty on Old Mission Peninsula

Saturday, May 16, 2015

Bring on spring! On Old Mission Peninsula, that means new wine releases. Relish samples of WOMP’s newest vintages, as well as spring’s arrival to Old Mission Peninsula. The wineries invite you to a day of tasting their new releases while enjoying fresh, spring-inspired food pairings. Several stops will even offer a chance to chat with WOMP winemakers about the grape-to-glass winemaking process, as well as offering limited barrel and tank tastings. (Try them before they’re ready to bottle!) It’s been a cold, cold winter. Thaw out with WOMP!

There are transportation companies which you may hire separately from the event, but most guests simply drive themselves. The entire peninsula is only 19 miles long and five miles at its widest, so all wineries are within a just a few miles of each other. Click here for a list of transport companies if you’d like to hire a shuttle tour.

Tickets are available online here for $25 per person, plus processing.

Sleeping Bear Dunes – Saturdays at the Lakeshore – Saturdays, Feb. 15 – March 8, 2014

Every Saturday Weekly from 02/01/2014 to 03/08/2014

Park rangers say “Let it snow!” so you can explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on snowshoes this winter! Join the rangers for a guided snowshoe hike every Saturday throughout the winter. Snowshoe hikes will be offered every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. through the end of February. Meet at the National Lakeshore visitor center in Empire. If you don’t have your own, snowshoes will be loaned at no charge. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. Reservations are required whether you need to borrow snowshoes or have your own. Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are limited to 30 participants. Please call 231-326-5134, extension 328, for details and to make reservations.

Snowshoe hikes are fun for all ages. Inside the visitor center, rangers will first provide basic snowshoeing instructions, and then everyone will travel by car to the trailhead or area of the National Lakeshore pre-selected for that day. Once there, the ranger will help participants learn about the park’s unique features and winter’s effect on them by exploring and discovering clues on site. Be prepared and plan to be outside until about 3:00 p.m. Dress in layers and wear waterproof boots to be most comfortable.

Not only is snowshoeing easy, fun, and good exercise, it is also an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The ranger-led hikes are mildly strenuous, yet they proceed at a leisurely pace for only one and a half miles at the most.

Location: Meet at visitor center
Time: 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Fee Information: Park pass required
