Hillside Homestead is a small farm in Suttons Bay, Michigan. I enjoy the homesteading life, with a big slant to historic methods. At this time I’m sharing some adventures here and on social media. I’ve been taking some time to myself and reorganizing the way I do things. More might be available in the future.

This elegant B&B in a 1920s cottage is 1 block from a sandy Lake Michigan beach and 2 blocks from the Suttons Bay town center.
Chic, air-conditioned rooms are individually decorated and feature free WiFi and flat-screen cable TVs, plus private bathrooms and minifridges.
Full breakfast is included and features signature granola plus hot entrees made with locally-sourced products. The house features original artworks and sculpture.

I was inclined to include the ol’ “stop and smell the roses” adage with this post but actually, I find Ferris Buehler a little more poignant- “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Pretty wise for some sack of shit rich kid that probably didn’t graduate high school. It’s the little adventures you end up remembering more rather than shooting for those ideas of grandiose. Make more out of your day to day, every little step is a part of the journey.

Celebrating three years married today to the most ...
It’s Michigan Wine Monday! Did you know bellagowinery was not only the first to plant Auxerrois (pronounced Awk - Sair - Wah) in Michigan (in 1987) but also one of the first in the country?
This gorgeous wine was aged in neutral oak barrels just long enough to gain richness without sacrificing the tropical fruit flavors. It’s delightful!
Auxerrois is a cool climate varietal that originated in France but it’s also grown in Germany and Luxembourg and other places where cool climate varietals thrive (such as Leelanau Peninsula!). It’s a similar varietal to Pinot Blanc and is a full sibling to Chardonnay.
bellagowinery should be on your short list of Michigan wineries to visit. They grow more than 100 varieties on their property, and produce several hard ciders as well! Bel Lago Winery’s tasting room features a one-of-a-kind panoramic view of south Lake Leelanau.

If you are coming to stay with us, one our features you will enjoy most is our location. Right in the heart of downtown Leland, Historic Fishtown, The Manitou Island Ferry, several Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau beaches, and great shopping are all within a short walk. As well, just a short drive will take you to sites such as the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, the Northport Lighthouse, Port Oneida, and of course all of our fantastic local vineyards. And if you are visiting for golf ~ there are several wonderful courses in Leelanau just waiting for you. Our Leelanau Conservancy trails are another wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
Upstairs our four guest rooms have the feel and charm of days gone by. Each one has been renovated and has a unique personality detailed below. All rooms have air-conditioning and WI-Fi. We do not have televisions on the property. Please note that all rooms are on the second floor, and we do not have an elevator. Children under 10 are not permitted. Pets are not permitted.
